Hart's Best Yet
Understand, I am a fan of Carolyn Hart and have read every one of her books. This is one of her very best. No longer is the writing somewhat stilted and the characterization shallow. Here we have a suspenseful, well-reasoned plot with an interesting assortment of characters. The exotic setting of a Hawaiian island is evoked with economic use of adjectives. In fact, this is a very believable story. If you enjoy good solid writing in a conservative style, you will enjoy this book.

A great mystery.
This was the first Henrie O book I've read. It won't be the last. I liked Henrie O. She is a strong character who can face her fears and do what needs to be done. In this case, she needs to begin to solve the mystery of her husband's death. So it's off to Hawaii to meet one of her husband's old friends, who is also a lady and thus begins her experience.

This is not like the Carolyn Hart mystery series Death on Demand. The characters are very different and the mystery a bit more dark. Also, she doesn't put in all the references to other mystery novels as she does in her Death on Demand books.

Enjoy.

Great book!!!
Six years ago, Henrietta "Henrie O" O'Dwyer Collins' beloved husband, fellow newspaper reporter, Richard, fell to his death off of a cliff in the Hawaiian island of Kauai. When he died, Richard was visiting a close friend, the legendary foreign correspondent, Belle Ericcson, a woman he had bonded with in Nam during the war. Now Henrie O learns that her beloved spouse's death was not an accident, but was apparently cold blooded murdered.

Henrie O is angry and wants vengeance on the perpetrator. She travels to Hawaii to visit Belle, who was her rival for her spouse's affections. She knows that the killer is at a family reunion being hosted on the woman's estate. No matter what she must do or who she must hurt in the process, Henrie O plans to complete her quest of identifying her husband's killer and bringing the individual to justice.

Carolyn Hart proves why she deserves all the awards (winner of the Agatha, Anthony, and Macauley awards for this mystery series) she has garnered. DEATH IN PARADISE: A Henrie O Mystery is one of the author's best mystery novels to date because the book is an enjoyable, exciting and intellectually stimulating who-done-it with a suspenseful ending. This reviewer strongly recommends the entire series, but especially this particular tale.

Dreams
I have read all of the Christy Miller books, and this one is my favorite. I laughed and cried and experienced the joy along with Christy. I feel as though I am I am there, because a lot of the things Christy went through, I have too. I have know read all of the Christy Miller books and I am on Don't You Wish, book 3, of the Sierra Jensen series. It will be "awesome" to see what happens to Todd, Christy, Doug, Sierra, and everyone else in the rest of the Sierra Jensen series and Christy's college years. Robin is such a great author, and I have become involved in her books. She has kept my interest, and got me closer to God.

Christy Miller Books
ok, so this book is mainly about christy who is having her 16th birthday and her parents surprise her to a trip to Hawwii with her best friend from her old home in wisconsin. As they get there Paula is flirting with Todd(Christy's "boyfriend") and Christy gets very jellous.a lot of other things happen too but u have 2 read it to see what else! I love Robin jones Gunn!I have read all the christy miller books, and I love them all! I have actrually cried in every single one because they make you seem like you are Christy! They made me give my heart 2 the lord and they actrually make me feel jellous or happy or sad.

Christy+Todd=Hmm?
This book was one of the best books I've ever read in my entire life! I am 12 years old, but I realize the concept of the story line and plot. Paula, no offense, reminds me of a "cheerleader" at my school. I'm going into middle school this fall, and I need a really good book to help keep me not so nervous, and believe me, these help alot. I recommend #1-5 in the Christy Miller series and #1, 8-10 in the Sierra Jensen series b/c that's all I've read so far!

Secrets and Mysteries of Hawaii: A Call to the Soul: Planetary Crossroads and the Key to Our Future
Published in Paperback by Health Communications (October, 1995)
Authors: Pila of Hawaii, William "Pila" Chiles, Health Communications, Pila, and Pila Chiles
Average review score:

For the awakening Soul who is aware of Planetary change!!
At a time when all souls on the planet are awakening, this very special book invites your soul to sing and explore the secrets and mysteries of the universal force of power and energy that exists not only in Hawaii but deep within yourself as well. Withe Pila the "seer" as your expert guide, you will be taken on a journey of adventure and discovery. You will become a "kahuna" student of the secrets, and you will learn that the body of the Hawaiian islands can be thought of as a symbolic body of all levels of mind, body and spirit. To know Hawaii is to know yourself and the answer to the yearning of your soul. There is no greater spokesperson on the spirit of Hawaii than this man "Pila" Chiles. He is the Gatekeeper of the soul of Hawaii. Dr. P. Sunray, author/Director, Sunray Healing Haven & National Interfaith Seminary

Hauntingly soul stirring.
I just bought the book "Secrets & Mysteries of Hawaii" and have read it through once already. (Of course I'm going to read it again). I related to everything that the author said in this book -- I was 'initiated' on the Big Island 6 years ago (during the solar eclipse). I visited several spots of the Island, and got a respectful salutation from Madame Pele. I never got to encounter a kahuna while on the Island, but I had a mystical experience there

This Book is a Gem
So many wonderful reviews about this remarkable book in regards to its magic, depth and humor have already been written.
I can agree with every single word, any reviewer has stated, completely.
Thus I would like to point out another special passage of Pila's guidebook which turned out to be a very touching message for my personal life. The "Call to the Soul" stepped into my world coincidentally before I went to Kaua'i, Hawaii, in order to meet Goddess Pele.
Amongst so many lines full of marvellous depth there were also these two sentences, since then decorating the wall of my apartment, saying:
"And all along the way of life there were only the three things that counted. Something to do, something to look forward to, and the third one, that blessing, if it ever happens... someone to share it with."
Each soul has its own yearning, every person is seeking individual truth.
Many magic things happened since I read this book. And they led me eventually to Pila's personal "Akashic Life Path Readings" which definitely saved and changed my own life!
I will reread this book and return to Hawaii soon...

Best Dives' Snorkeling Adventures : A Guide to the Bahamas, Bermuda, Caribbean, Hawaii & Florida Keys
Published in Paperback by PhotoGraphics Publishing (March, 1998)
Authors: Joyce Huber and Jon Huber
Average review score:

A terrific book for vacation planning
This is the best book for snorkeling I've ever found. The other books are so vague, they don't tell me much of anything. This one describes all the neat places to walk in from the beach and go snorkeling, how rough or calm the area is, how to get to various snorkeling beaches once I get there, whether the kids can safely swim in each area. It also has all the resorts that have snorkeling off their beaches, which is really nice for people traveling with small children and the airlines and travel stuff we need.

Great Book for Beginners And Life Long Divers
My wife and I found this book to be one of the best, Snorkeling guides we have ever used. We find all of the Huber's books to be informative, thorough, accurate, and fun to read as well. We love it! We buy new ones every time they update them with new info.

We love this book.
My wife and I, both avid snorklers, picked up a copy for our trip to the British Islands and found some really neat new spots. This is a terrific resource.

Kauai Trailblazer : Where to Hike, Snorkel, Bike, Paddle, Surf
Published in Paperback by Diamond Valley Company (July, 2003)
Authors: Jerry Sprout, Janine Sprout, and Jerry
Average review score:

THE one to have along
We tested all the features of this book on our vacation last month. This book is definitely our first choice of all the Kauai guides. It proved itself a great alternative to all the package tours that can run up to over $100 per person for one outing. The authors provide easy driving directions, accurate trail descriptions, hike degree of difficulty, potential hazards.

It was a big help knowing where to go the minute we hopped off the plane and was responsible for us having one fantastic time.

First Visit
This book served as our primary field guide for finding hiking routes. We had heard Kauai was known for its uncrowded spaces and this book proved it very true. No other book lists so many trails. It is well written and contains precise directions and maps that made driving to the traiheads easy. During our two week trip there was never any down time which is amazing for a family of five. When the boys wouldn't walk another step, we hauled them to recommended beaches where they could boogie board and build sand castles. We're lending this treasure with all our underlining and notes to the family next door and plan to buy their Maui book for our Christmas vacation next year.

Sweet Aloha
I bought KAUAI TRAILBLAZER for a recent trip to the Garden Isle and found it a friendly companion to have tucked under my arm. It's got explicit directions, so if you get lost, it's because you want to be lost! There is a soft subtlety in the photography--like snapshots in my memory, evocative. Imbued in the text is a sensitivity to the land and peoples of Hawaii. I was struck by a certain reverence that allows witness without disturbance. There is a marked dry wit to Sprout's writing style; he lightly peppers his guide with humor without detracting from the densely packed info he delivers to anyone wishing to visit Kauai--whether they want a useful first-time tour of some well-known sites, or desire to stray off the beaten path. The book definitely helped me and I highly recommend it. Aloha & best wishes, Doreen Sinky, BC, Canada

URBAN SHAMAN
Published in Paperback by Fireside (November, 1990)
Author: Serge King
Average review score:

Essential Reading!!!
Urban Shaman is packed with information and is reader friendly. I consider it essential reading for anyone interested in Huna or any form of shamanism. The principles and techniques in this book are easy to understand and effective when used. Urban Shaman impressed me so much that I purchased two more of Serge Kahili King's books, four of his videos and one of his cassette series. He is an author and a teacher with a message that will enrich your life.

"the world is what you think it is"
Studying this statement is in and of itself a worthwhile project. If you learn nothing else, this is well worth the price of the book.

I have several books on Shamanism and Self-Healing. Among these are 6 books by Serge King. All are great. I reread Urban Shaman because there is so much that I can't absorb all at one time. This book helped my in my healings of self and others and in my Shamanic journeys, the initial technique which I learned from the Foundation for Shamanic Studies workshop. I am a Reiki master and find his techniques to augment my methods very well.

I have found nothing in Serge King's books that doesn't work, some techniques better than others. I have found nothing in other books that Serge King doesn't cover in some way or form.

If you are going to get one book that covers most things well, in a very open and non-dogmatic manner, Urban Shaman is the book to get. From journeying to making walking sticks to healing methods, this book covers it all. If you want more than one book, get another of Serge King's books. They all work.

This book puts Shamanism in a whole new light
Pssst! Hey, wanna be a Shaman? You don't have to live in the woods and you don't have to beat any drums. We're looking at a city slickers guide to the New Age. No investment, no special vows, just add a little time, thought and practice. Castenada gave us "The Way of the Warrior" and Serge Khalili King gives us "The Way of the Adventurer." From basic methods to "grokking water", this book covers all the bases of a Hawaiian philosophy in a very readable format. Unlike many shamanic manuals, this book doesn't advocate getting back to "Mother Earth," rather it focuses on the need we have to come to terms with ourselves and how to turn our newfound abilities outward to share with others. Readers get a fresh perspective on how shamanic techniques can make life better. King builds on the basics, drawing a road map for creativity, personal transformation and healing.

Hawaii the Big Island Revealed: The Ultimate Guidebook
Published in Paperback by Wizard Pubns (June, 2002)
Authors: Andrew Doughty and Harriett Friedman
Average review score:

WOW! What a phenomenal guidebook!
I bought this book (and "The Ultimate Kaua`i Guidebook") on the recommendation of several people on a travel message board. This was our forth trip to the Hawaiian Islands and my wife and I were going there to spend a week on The Big Island and a week on Kaua`i. We wanted to see the most we could and we felt these books might help us make better plans to do just that. And did it ever! We ended up finding that one week on each island wasn't enough and we are already planning our next trip.

Their off-the-beaten-path places are just awesome. From exploring a lava tube that empties out 20 feet over the water near Pu`uhonua o Honaunau National Historic Park to driving (with a 4WD SUV) down into Waipio Valley; from touring the top of Mauna Kea (the highest point in all of Hawai`i) to hiking out to touch the molten lava flowing from Pu`u O`o; from seeing a "lava tree" at Lava Tree State Park to tasting some organically grown fruit at a roadside stand.....you'll find the details in this book. And their accurate maps and directions to the out-of-the-way places will keep even the most wayward soul from getting lost.

My wife and I cannot recommend this book enough. If you like to explore the places you visit, this book is for you. Well worth it's weight in gold....well, almost. :)

downright incredible!
My husband and I used this guide book constantly on our week-long trip to the Big Island, from which we returned just 3 days ago. This books tells about all the little-known and out-of-the-way places that the tour busses don't or won't take you to.

If you're the adventurous type, definitely rent a 4WD as the book suggests. There's a lot of wonderful places on the island that just can't be accessed without one.

We found the book's accuracy to be nearly 100%, even though it's been out nearly 2 years now. It was so exciting to see and experiece all the things in real life that I first learned about through this book. Don't miss the snorkeling at Kealakekua Bay. It's beyond the imagination!

The excellent restaurant reviews were also very helpful to us. 11/24/00

The New Gold Standard in Travel Guides
Witty, thorough, useful, honest, and best of all, accurate to a fault. I took my family to Hawai'i armed with this book and we were not disappointed once. This guide was written by residents of Kailua and their local knowledge shows. In the book's introduction they claim to have spent two years putting this guide together. Every minute of that effort shows in the result.

The best feature of the book is that is is organized as a set of driving tours from the Kailua-Kona and Hilo areas. Almost everyone visiting the Big Island travels by rented car and stays in either of these areas. The struc- ture is perfect for a tourist, right down to listing the mile-marker numbers where unmarked sideroads lead to beaches, volcano view spots, and other points of interest not on the rental car maps. It is loaded with color photographs, maps in many level of details -- including hiking trails -- and easy-to-spot icons of the things to see and do. We visited friends who have lived in Kailua for years who were surprised at how many new things they learned.

I have to stop now before I embarass myself. If you visit the Big Island and don't take this book with you your trip will be that much less fun.

Freedom's Menace
Published in Hardcover by Hot Lava Publishing (15 April, 2002)
Author: W. Laurence Willis
Average review score:

A fast-paced, vivacious read
W. Laurence Willis' debut novel, Freedom's Menace is an action-packed adventure that pits heroic agent Trevor Brice against evil mastermind An Lolo. This Asian mastermind has secured the title of Chinese premier and wages a war of terror against the United States. The secret of Lolo's power lies hidden in the volcanic fires of Hawaii; Trevor Brice must brave the wrath of Pele the Fire Goddess and many more mundane dangers to uncover the truth and save America. Freedom's Menace is a fast-paced, vivacious read that can confidently be recommended for personal reading lists and community library collections.

Couldn't put it down!
Freedom's Menace was a fast paced, exciting action thriller. This writer kept me up all night reading! The main character, Trevor Brice, was down to earth enough to relate to him, yet bold and smart. The ending didn't drop off into nothing as so many books do these days. This was by far the the best book I've read in years. I can't wait for the next Trevor Brice book to come out.

Freedom's Menace
My favorite genre of books is adventure. The first adventure book I ever read was Tom Clancy. He was my favorite on a long list of adventure writers. He had a whole shelf to himself on my bookcase. Now that I've read Freedom's Menace, W. Laurence Willis' book has gotten itself a place on the Tom Clancy shelf. I cannot wait until the next Trevor Brice novel comes out, and I hope Mr. Willis writes enough books to have his own shelf!

Snorkel Hawaii: Maui and Lanai
Published in Paperback by Indigo Publications (December, 1996)
Authors: Judy Malinowski and Mel Malinowski
Average review score:

A must for anyone planning to snorkel!
After reading reviews from everyone about this book, I had to purchase it myself before a trip to Maui. This book was an indispensable guide! It offered great advice about snorkel equipment and safety which was VERY helpful for us beginners. The authors rate snorkeling places according to quality and difficulty. Maps and detailed information are provided so that even the most remote places are easy to find. We did the "'Ahihi-Kina'u unmarked trail" and loved it! It was amazing to have a beautiful cove all to ourselves. I definitely recommend it for anyone wanting to snorkel in Maui.

Buy this book if you plan to snorkel in Maui!
We bought the Maui/Lanai version of the book and found it was the book we used most once we got to Maui. We spent 6 days snorkeling in the mornings and this book gave us exact information about where to go! Some of the sites were wonderful and off the beaten path.(None of the other books or the dive shops had ALL of this information.) Well worth the small investment!

Great book! It saved us lots of time finding best spots.
This book made our trip to Maui! So much more detail about the good places to snorkel, and how to find them, than any other guidebooks. We loved all the tips about how to have more fun snorkeling. Lanai made a great day trip, too, just like the book says.

Island of the Innocent (Cheney Duval, M.D., 7)
Published in Paperback by Bethany House (December, 1998)
Authors: Gilbert Morris and Lynn Morris
Average review score:

There will be a book EIGHT
I have read all the Cheney Duvall books. Although I have been frustrated with how the series has gone along with Cheney's and Shiloh's relationship this book finally put an end to the question of how Cheney actually felt about Shiloh. This book takes place on an Hawaiin Island where Shiloh's family was supposed to have come from. He goes there to find out more. Cheney finds out some disturbing news about Bain Winslow the man who brought Shiloh to the Island. She goes trying to convince him to come back when a volcano thought to be dead errupts. They are caught on the Island trying to find a way off. At the end, Cheney finally decides that she really cares for Shiloh. I am looking forward to book eight coming out. I wrote Gilbert Morris when the series came out he said that there would be eight books in this particular series. I'm curious to see how they wrap this series up.

Island of the Innocent is fabulous. I want the sequel!!!
Wow! What can I say? Island of the Innocent was totally awesome. I can't wait for the sequel. Let me tell you, when Shiloh came back to save Cheney, I was thrilled and scared to death. Wouldn't it be just like an author to make something horrible happen right when the good parts are beginning? Thankfully, nothing horrible happened to Shiloh and the book continued. This book was slightly different from all the other Cheney Duvall books ( I own them all). The writing style was slightly different. That makes me wonder, did Lynn Morris write more of this book than the others or did Gilbert Morris just change his style a little? Not that I mind, I still think the book is excellent. I thought it was totally completely awesome when I saw how the authors had tied in the Winslow series written by Gilbert Morris into this series. I'm guessing that with a couple more Cheney Duvall books, they can make it fit right into the Winslow series. Anyways, my biggest question is WHEN IS SHILOH GOING TO BECOME A CHRISTIAN AND MARRY CHENEY? I mean, by now, we know that they love each other and should be together. I don't want the series to end but I feel as if I have been waiting a long time for those two to speak their hearts to eachother. Well, that's pretty much all I have to say, so I'll end it with a couple words. If you haven't read this book and the others in the series, READ THEM!

The best one in the series so far!!!
This was an awesome book. It had its shortcomings, but in general it was great. In this book, Shiloh Irons, Dr. Cheney Duvall's nurse and a former pugilistic champion, has sailed from San fransisco to Hawaii with a young man named Bain Winslow (sound familiar, diehard Morris fans??) to try and find out more about his family. (when he was an infant he was abondoned on the doorstep of an orphanage.) Cheney, still in Frisco, discovered disturbing facts about Winslow. So disturbing, in fact that she decides to sail to Hawaii herself to warn Shiloh, and ends up staying on the island. Then, a "dormant" volcano decides that naptime's over. Cheney and Shiloh, along with some friends, find themselves racing for their lives, trapped between a river of molten lava , a burning jungle, and shark-and-jellyfish-infested waters. Of course, through it all, Cheney depends on God for strength to make it through it all. I think that this is the most exciting book so far... Gilbert and Lynn Morris have that talent of writing that makes you feel like you are right there with the characters. I was screaming and sobbing and praying right along with Cheney. Anyway, it was a fantastic book, but who's with me in thinking that Gilbert Morris should hire a new editor??? And someone please, please tell the authors to hurry up and write the next book!!
